Varanasi Day-3
The Ultimate Sarnath & Varanasi Family Guide: Stupas, Namo Ghat & A Magical Night Boat Ride
Namaste friends! 🙏 Welcome back to another beautiful chapter on Puneetspassport. If you’ve been following our Varanasi Series, you know how mesmerizing the spiritual energy of Kashi can be. But for Day 3, we decided to step away from the bustling streets of the city and head towards a destination that defines absolute peace and tranquility.
Whether you are planning a complete Sarnath Varanasi travel guide or just looking for peaceful places near Varanasi for a one-day trip, this blog will help you plan the perfect family itinerary. Travelling with Ankita and the kids, Aishani and Vaidik, means we always look for spots that blend deep history with a family-friendly vibe—and today’s journey delivered exactly that!
đźš— The Serene Drive: Varanasi to Sarnath
We started our morning with a smooth 10 km drive from Varanasi to Sarnath. It is amazing how quickly the landscape changes from crowded ghats to calm, green avenues. If you are doing a family travel vlog in India or just traveling with little ones, Sarnath is a blessing. We made sure our trusty Insulated Travel Water Bottle was filled up, as staying hydrated while exploring historical ruins is a must!
🛕 Sarnath Full Tour: Walking in the Footsteps of Buddha
Sarnath is the sacred Dharmachakra Pravartan Sthal—the exact place where Gautam Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining enlightenment in Bodh Gaya.
Our first stop was the iconic Dhamek Stupa. Standing in front of this massive, beautifully carved structure gave us goosebumps. Right nearby is the Sanchi Stupa remains area, managed by the ASI. Seeing the ancient brick and stone foundations gives you a vivid glimpse into India’s rich architectural past. I made sure to pull out my GoPro Hero13 Black here to capture the sheer scale of the stupa and the devotees meditating peacefully on the lawns.
Next, we visited the Mulagandha Kuti Vihar, a stunning temple known for its incredibly detailed wall paintings depicting Buddha’s life. The chanting and the serene atmosphere make it a highlight of any Buddhist temple tour in India.
From there, we took a short walk to the Digambar Jain Temple Sarnath. Its architecture instantly reminded us of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. The calmness here is amplified by the gentle fluttering of pigeons and parrots around the beautifully carved temple premises.
🏛️ Diving into History: Sarnath Museums
Sarnath isn’t just about temples; it’s a treasure trove of ancient Indian history. We explored two incredible museums:
Anagarika Dharmapala Museum: Located right next to the main stupa, this space is dedicated to the great Buddhist reformer. We spent a quiet 20 minutes admiring rare Buddha relics, ancient manuscripts, and historical sculptures.
Sarnath Archaeological Museum: This is an absolute must-visit! The kids were fascinated because entry for children is totally free, and the facilities are very well-maintained. The absolute showstopper here is the original Ashoka Lion Capital—India’s National Emblem! Seeing it in person is a proud moment. We also saw fascinating 1st and 2nd-century artifacts, including unique sculptures of Lord Shiva, Parvati, and Bhairav Baba. Pro Tip: Wear your most Comfortable Walking Shoes because you will easily spend over an hour walking through these fascinating galleries.
After all the walking, we enjoyed a simple, comforting vegetarian lunch at a local Sarnath eatery before heading back toward the Ganges.
🌆 Evening at Namo Ghat: Varanasi’s Modern Marvel
As the sun began to lower, we arrived at Namo Ghat, one of Varanasi’s newest and most beautifully developed riverfronts. The moment you step in, you are greeted by the giant, awe-inspiring Namaskar Mudra sculptures—a perfect backdrop for family photos!
What we loved most about Namo Ghat is how family-friendly it is. It’s incredibly clean, beautifully lit, and less crowded than the older ghats. Aishani and Vaidik had a blast hopping onto the small train ride available for kids. Capturing the kids running around this spacious ghat was a breeze using my Smartphone Gimbal Stabilizer for smooth, cinematic footage.
🚤 A Magical Night Boat Ride to Dashashwamedh Ghat
To wrap up this incredible day, we took a boat ride directly from Namo Ghat towards the iconic Dashashwamedh Ghat. The ticket was just ₹100 per person, and let me tell you—this 20-minute journey was pure magic.
Cruising on the gentle waves of the Ganga river at night, far from the crowds, is an experience everyone should have. As we approached Dashashwamedh Ghat, the distant, echoing sounds of the Ganga Aarti, combined with the golden reflection of the temple lights dancing on the dark water, created a surreal, divine atmosphere. Taking a night boat ride after the main Aarti crowd has settled is a secret travel hack for the most peaceful spiritual experience.
Sarnath and the ghats of Varanasi offer a perfect blend of history, spirituality, and modern comfort. If you are planning a trip, definitely add this Sarnath-to-Namo Ghat itinerary to your list!
Don’t forget to pack everything neatly in a good Travel Backpack for Family and prepare for the trip of a lifetime.
